Imphal: Assam Rifles seized brown sugar worth Rs 55.86 crore in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district and detained two Myanmar nationals for drug smuggling, paramilitary forces said.
Two suspected smugglers from Myanmar, hailing from neighboring Tamu town, were spotted by Assam Rifles personnel during a routine check at H Munnom village near the Indo-Myanmar border on Tuesday.
“Both were going suspiciously in a two-wheeler and were carrying three carton boxes and were heading towards Moreh town,” Assam Rifles said.
On thorough examination of the boxes, the Assam Rifles team found 648 cases of soap containing 27.94 kg of brown sugar. Both the Myanmar nationals and the seized drugs have been handed over to Moreh police station for further necessary legal action.
Meanwhile, concerned over the development, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh praised the Assam Rifles, posting on his official Facebook page that “some Myanmarese and their agents are trying to exterminate the local population of Manipur. So the war on drugs has started.”
In another unrelated development, the Manipur police on Tuesday seized 6.12 kg of brown sugar and 4.44 kg of ‘Duniya Aap Ki’ pills from a person in Thengnoupal district.
