Aizawl: Various civil society organizations will hold demonstrations in Manipur on June 23 to show solidarity with the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Hmar-Zomi people.
A mass solidarity protest will be held near Raj Bhavan in Aizawl, the NGO Coordination Committee meeting, headed by the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA), a group of major civil societies and student organizations, said on Monday.
The meeting also urged its sub-headquarters in other districts and partner organizations like the Young Lai Association (YLA) in South Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district and the Siaha-based Mara Thyatli Py (MTP) or Mara Youth Association to extend their scope. Perform simultaneous demonstrations if possible.
The Coordinating Committee has expressed deep sorrow over the sufferings of the Zo people due to communal violence in neighboring Manipur.
It said that many tribal people were killed and their houses burnt down in the violence.
Meanwhile, the Churachandpur-based Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) claimed that a 22-year-old youth was killed by separatist groups in Loklakpai village of Churachandpur district, although the state governor on Monday visited the district headquarters as part of the peacekeeping mission.
“This heinous act is a clear indication that the Mete groups are not interested in promoting peace,” the forum said.
Manipur has been witnessing ethnic violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities since May 3, which has left nearly 100 people dead and at least 35,000 displaced.
Recently, the Center had constituted a 51-member peace committee headed by the Governor of Manipur. However, several KUKI representatives said they would boycott the panel due to the inclusion of Chief Minister N Biren Singh as a member.
