Silchar: Notorious criminal Hifzur Rahman, who escaped from Silchar Central Jail on May 11, was shot dead by the police near the Assam-Meghalaya border on July 10. The encounter took place following intelligence information.
Hifjur was arrested in 2011 for murdering a father-son duo in Karimganj. Three policemen were also injured.
When the police tried to arrest Hifzur,, he resisted fiercely and attacked the officers. In response, the police were forced to open fire, resulting in serious injuries to Hifzur who was later referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Silchar where he succumbed to his injuries. Two police officers were also injured during the encounter.
This incident comes after another jail escape in Assam. On April 16, Shyamal Pal, who has been serving a life sentence in a murder case since 2011, managed to escape from Udalguri jail.
Earlier, on March 19, Assam witnessed another sensational jailbreak. Abdul Wasid, accused of several crimes including car theft, managed to escape from police custody in Karimganj.
The incident took place when Wasid was being taken to the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate. Efforts are on to recapture him.
