Thoubal: Angry locals of Heirok stormed the 37 battalion of the Assam Rifles in Phundrei on Tuesday, demanding punishment of the army personnel for instilling fear among the locals.
According to reports, a team of 25 personnel of 37 ARC, including four women personnel, came to Heirok at around 11 am on Tuesday for an operation in their area but were prevented from entering the area by the locals. After being blockaded by people, the AR left the scene and returned to his battalion.
People from Wangjing, Khongjom and Langathel also joined the crowd.
Thoubal district reached the spot and dispersed the crowd. SP Thoubal assured the crowd that AR personnel would be posted in the battalion.
Meanwhile, an apex body of 24 clubs in Heirok suspected that 37 Assam Rifles personnel might be Kuki militants and warned the government of strong protests by the people.
