Imphal: A suspected Kuki underground freedom fighter was killed in an exchange of fire with the Assam Rifles in Suwangphumun village of Manipur’s Phezawl district, bordering Assam and Mizoram in the west.
An AK-47 rifle, a magazine, 27 live rounds of ammunition and some random documents were recovered from the slain rebel, an official source said on Saturday.
Initial reports said that the encounter took place when Assam Rifles troops were on routine patrolling in and around the village of Suwangphumun and suspected Kuki militants opened fire.
A suspected Kuki militant was killed when the paramilitary forces retaliated, while others managed to escape into nearby forests around 4 pm on Friday.

Borobeka police station, Jiribam district which borders Assam in the west, later picked up the body from the spot where the alleged encounter took place, sources said.
