In NEHU ragging case Angami students urges govt to intervene

Kohima: The Angami Students Union (ASU) on Friday urged the Nagaland government to intervene and ensure justice against the alleged ragging of an Angami Naga student at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
The apex student body of the Angami Naga tribe said it is disturbed and alarmed by the alleged ragging incident against a student from Nagaland that took place on October 8 at Arbella Boys Hostel, Chasingre, Tura, NEHU campus.
ASU President Khrisamhalie David Mere and Grievances Cell Convenor Thejalhoukho Thomas Khawakhrie said, “The Union condemns the heinous act of the said hostel miscreants, who have threatened not only the safety of Naga students but also the human rights inside an academic campus. Rights have also been violated.” .
The Union urged the NEHU authority to immediately take appropriate action against the culprits and also appealed to the law enforcement agencies to arrest the culprits under the relevant Acts/Rules.
“Angami Students’ Union is surprised to learn that despite bringing the matter to their notice, no action has been initiated by the authorities concerned. In this regard, the Union questions the institute whether it is the NEHU campus. encourages ragging under, one of the most famous universities in the North East?” he questioned.
Expressing its deep sympathy with the victim, the tribal students’ organization said it will not stop the matter until justice is delivered and Naga students are assured of safety.
The union appealed to the state government to immediately intervene in the matter and ensure delivery of justice at the earliest.
Narrating the ordeal, the student also registered a case at South Police Station in Kohima a day after the incident.
