In Moreh tension escalates as Kukis call for removal of commandos

Imphal: Tension erupted along the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district after a gunfight between the Assam Rifles and the banned People’s Liberation Army (PLA), with Kuki outfits demanding the removal of commandos from Moreh police station is on the rise.
According to sources, a gunfight broke out between 20 Assam Rifles and the outlawed PLA yesterday evening in Saibon village of Manipur’s Tengnoupal district, which shares the border with Myanmar.
It is reported that a freedom fighter of the banned PLA was injured in a bomb blast fired by the Assam Rifles personnel.
Sources added that when additional troops of Assam Rifles arrived in the disputed area, the PLA operatives managed to escape to Myanmar territory.

Meanwhile, several women representing the Kuki Women’s Union and Human Rights Moreh (KWU and HR) staged a protest at the New Moreh playground in Tengnoual district on Friday.
They are demanding the removal of state police commandos from Moreh police station in the border town.

Both these organizations have alleged that Manipur police commandos killed two students in Moreh on May 3.
Furthermore, they claim that the lives of innocent civilians are at risk due to the presence of police commandos, who they perceive as a communal force.

A woman leader of KWU revealed that the community is afraid to send their children to school due to the presence of police commandos in Moreh Town.
Placards displayed at the protest site read: “Remove the commandos who are killing us,” “We don’t want communal forces, remove the commandos from the Moreh,” “Go back the killer commandos,” “Put PR to save lives.” ,” “Tribal Lives Matter,” “Government of India, Find the Truth” and “GOI, Save the Kuki.”
