Shillong: In a tragic incident, a Bolero pick-up carrying around 33 passengers, including two female choir members of Umdang Presbyterian Church, overturned at Mawkumkha village in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills district.
The accident claimed the lives of two female choir members, identified as Dearly Daffodil Rashir and Sonamika Ryntong, both residents of Umdang village, who died on the spot.
Dearly was studying MSW in Dhanketi, Shillong, and Ryntong was preparing for her Class 10 board exams.
Other passengers in the trunk sustained serious injuries.
The incident took place around 10 am on Sunday morning when a Bolero pick-up carrying the village members reached Mawkumkha. According to eyewitnesses, the driver was trying to park the vehicle when it fell into a deep ditch, resulting in the sides of the truck crushing Rashir and Ryntong, resulting in their tragic deaths.
The choir members, aged between 15 and 25 years, were on their way to Mawkumkha Presbyterian Church to attend a service at Rilyngngam Presbytery Church. Mawkumkha village is located about 13 km from Mawshynrut sub-division.
Other choir members who sustained serious injuries were immediately shifted to Nongstoin Civil Hospital for treatment. Four more patients were taken to NEIGRIHMS for further medical attention.
