Guwahati: At least 150 people were admitted to hospital after allegedly consuming ‘prasad’ at a religious function in Mariani in Assam’s Jorhat.
The incident took place during Naam Kirtan in Naksari area of Mariani.
The cause of the disease is not yet known, but the health department officials suspect that it may be due to food poisoning.The food used for the function was procured from a local shop.
The victims, including women and children, were rushed to Naksari Model Hospital, where they were given first aid.
However, he was later referred to Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH) for advanced treatment.
All patients are said to be in stable condition. An investigation into the matter has been initiated.
This is the second such incident in Assam in recent weeks. Last month, 15 people fell ill after eating prasad at a residence in Bandardewa.
