Shillong: There is an uneasy calm at Lapangap in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills region after a clash between Pnras and Karbis in the area.
On 26 September, an inter-state border clash broke out between Meghalaya and people belonging to the Pinnar and Karbi communities in Assam.
During the border skirmish, the Karbis reportedly resorted to bows and arrows, while the Pnars retaliated with gunfire.
Police officials from Assam and Meghalaya rushed to the scene of the encounter to control the situation.
According to reports, Assam police personnel fired teargas shells to disperse the clashing groups.
Tension has remained high in Meghalaya’s Lapangap region along the Assam border since the clashes began.
The clash, which reportedly ended on the evening of September 26 after the intervention of Assam and Meghalaya police personnel, resumed on September 27 at around 12:30 pm.
West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner (DC) Batlang S Sohliya said the magistrate and police force were present at the spot to maintain peace and calm people on both sides.
Lapangap village is located on the border of West Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya and West Karbi Anglong District of Assam.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya minister Paul Lyngdoh said Chief Minister Conrad Sangma spoke to his Assam counterpart on the clashes.
“Clashes have happened in the past and they will end when we manage to resolve the border dispute,” he said.
