In Kuki women paraded naked case total 7 accused arrested so far

Imphal: Manipur police on Monday evening arrested another man for parading and stripping two women naked in a video that has drawn nationwide condemnation.

Police said that with the latest arrest, the total number of suspects in the case has increased to seven.
Two women, who are tribals, were allegedly sexually assaulted before being set free by a mob on May 4. A 26-second video of the incident surfaced on July 19.

One of the women seen in the video is the wife of an ex-soldier, who served as a Subedar in the Assam Regiment and also fought in the Kargil war.
The complaint in connection with the video was lodged about a month ago – June 21 – at the Saikul police station in Kangpokpi district.
The arrests come amid a surge in communal violence in Manipur, in which more than 160 people have been killed since May 3. The violence erupted after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was held in the hill districts to protest the demand of Scheduled Tribes (STs) by the Mete community.
About 53 percent of Manipur’s population are Meiteis and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, including Nagas and Kuki, make up 40 percent and live mostly in the hill districts.
Police have said they are committed to bringing those responsible for the crime to justice. However, they has also appealed to the people of Manipur to maintain peace and harmony.
