Imphal: Days after cash and jewelery worth over Rs 2.25 crore went missing from the Axis Bank branch in Manipur’s Churachandpur, criminals targeted another bank in Kangpokpi district and stole computers and computers worth around Rs 1 crore. Other electronic items were stolen, officials said Friday.
The Kangpokpi branch of Manipur State Cooperative Bank in northern Imphal Valley has been closed since May 4, police told PTI, adding, “The theft was detected three days ago when officials went to open the bank”.
“Though the cash vault was found broken, the bank officials removed all the money from it and the ATM located in the bank premises in mid-May as per instructions from the head office,” the official said.
At least six computers, a printer and other electronic items are missing, the official said, adding that an FIR has been registered at Kangpokpi police station.
On July 10, cash and jewelery worth Rs 2.25 crore were found missing from the Axis Bank branch in Churachandpur.
Officials said they came to know about the theft when the bank reopened on May 3 after being closed for more than two months after violence erupted in the state.
Police said the thieves cut a hole through the rear of the bank and entered. “Apart from cash worth Rs 1.25 crore, gold jewelery worth over Rs 1 crore was also looted,” an official said.
More than 150 people have lost their lives and more than 3,000 have been injured since the communal violence erupted on May 3 when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was held to protest against the Meti community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status in the hill districts. ‘ was held.
