In Imphal situation still intense as heavy forces are deployed
Manipur: The situation in Imphal remains tense but heavy deployment of paramilitary forces trying to spread violent protests in the state. Mobs were seen in some areas of Imphal, but were dispersed by teargas fired by the police.
Protesters set fire to hundreds of buildings, including schools and churches, and also torched large retail outlets such as Bazar India. The situation had become so dire that 15,000 to 20,000 victims were successfully evacuated to safer places. Paramilitary forces comprising 14 companies of RAF, CRPF and BSF were deployed to control the situation.
Senior police officers have identified 23 vulnerable police stations and are handling the situation besides deploying central forces. The paramilitary forces are well trained to fight the enemies and will assist the Manipur Police in maintaining law and order.
The people have been appealed to hand over the weapons seized from the police posts as soon as possible. Those who fail to surrender will face severe consequences under the law. If the weapons are not handed over, the case may be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Meanwhile, MLA Vungzagin Valte was injured in the mob action and hospitalized but is now out of danger. It was also clarified that the rumor of mob rape in Churachandpur is baseless.
