Imphal: In a fresh incident of violence in Manipur, miscreants allegedly torched houses belonging to the Kuki community in Imphal last night.
According to reports, suspected militants set fire to houses belonging to the Kuki community at Zomi Villa in Imphal. The incident took place on Monday night around 11 pm.
This is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Manipur, which has been rocked by ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 3. Thousands of houses and religious places have also been burnt.
Earlier on Sunday, miscreants set fire to at least 14 excavators and a trailer truck engaged in road construction work on NH-37 connecting Imphal to Jiribam in Manipur.
The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up the Center and the Manipur government over the violence in the northeastern state. A Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud called for a comprehensive mechanism to tackle violence against women in Manipur as it heard a batch of petitions related to the ongoing communal clashes.
The Supreme Court termed the rape of women in Manipur as “appalling” and reprimanded the state police, saying it did not want the case to be handled by them.
“Time is running out for us, there is a great need for a healing touch in the state,” CJI Chandrachud said while seeking answers to several questions from the Centre.
