Manipur: Army Chief General Manoj Pande arrived in Imphal on Saturday. The Army Chief, who is on a two-day visit to violence-hit Manipur, arrived at the Imphal airport by an Indian Air Force flight Bharatiya Bayu Sena.
The army chief will visit various locations where he will interact with local formation commanders and take an initial assessment of the ground situation. According to a statement issued by the Union Ministry of Defence, he will also interact with the soldiers.
On Sunday, the Army Chief will meet Governor Anusuiya Uikey, Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Manipur Chief Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh to discuss the current situation and future trajectory and restore normalcy as soon as possible, the ministry said.
In view of the internal security situation in Manipur, the state administration had called in the army and the Assam Rifles on May 3.
The Union Defense Ministry said that the Army and the Assam Rifles have deployed 135 columns to diffuse the situation, establishing active control over sensitive and border areas. The ministry added that around 35,000 civilians were shifted to safe areas and immediate relief and humanitarian aid was provided to the displaced civilians by the army and the Assam Rifles.
