Imphal: A column of central forces and Manipur police on Wednesday arrested a self-proclaimed captain of the NSCN (IM) along with a 9mm carbine and 5 live rounds in an operation at Sawombung in Imphal East district, an official source said.
Based on specific intelligence, a joint team comprising columns of the Assam Rifles, Indian Army and Manipur Police launched an operation in the general area of Sawombung, about 12 km from Imphal.
Sources said the Assam Rifles started vigilant surveillance and kept a watch on the movement of the freedom fighter.
During checking and searching at a check point on NH 202 near Sawombung, the team detained a suspect later identified as self-styled Captain Shiningson Chilhang, aged 45, from Manipur. He was the son of Mathotmi Chilhang of Leikoiching village, Senapati district. Active freedom of NSCN (IM).
The team also seized a 9 mm carbine and five live rounds.
The person caught with the seized weapons has been handed over to Lamlai Police Station, Imphal East District for necessary legal action.
