Imphal: Four poachers were caught on Monday from Nongmaiching Reserve Forest in Manipur’s Imphal East district.
Heavy weapons and ammunition, which were used for hunting, have also been recovered from their possession.
According to sources, a joint team of Manipur Police, Forest Guards and officials launched the operation based on the confirmed information of some poachers entering the protected forest area.
Sources said that around 3:30 pm, four persons were arrested while trying to hunt nocturnal animals in the protected forest area.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh wrote on Facebook, “Four persons, arms and ammunition were seized from within the Nongmaiching RF used for hunting purposes early this morning by a joint team of the Sanjenbam Police and Nongmaiching forest.” ”
The team was led by Range Officer Nongmaiching Prabir N and further investigation is underway, the chief minister added.
The seized weapons include two state-of-the-art hunting rifles, forest knives, ammunition and other hunting equipment.
It said that the arrested poachers and seized weapons have been handed over to the concerned authority for further investigation.
