In Imphal brutal killing of 2 teens, thousands of students protested
Imphal: Disturbing images showing the gruesome killing of two Meitei students who went missing during the height of the ongoing crisis on July 6 have sparked a major outcry in the student community. Thousands of students came out on the streets today to condemn these cruel acts.
Starting at around 11 am, mainly students from institutions like TG Higher Secondary School, Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Ibutonsana Higher Secondary School, and CC Higher Secondary School participated in the protest.
They tried to march towards the Raj Bhawan and later the Chief Minister’s bungalow. However, the policemen stopped them from going within about 50 meters of the Raj Bhawan.
The police fired several rounds of tear gas and also released smoke bombs to disperse the protesters.
Protesters chanted slogans like “We want justice,” “We condemn the brutal killing of innocent students,” and “Punish the culprits as soon as possible.”One of the protesters strongly condemned the cold-blooded killing of the students. They stressed that the students are innocent and should not be victims of the ongoing crisis under any circumstances.
The demand was that the state government should arrest all the culprits as soon as possible, with a warning that if their demands were not met, various forms of agitation would be launched.
Another woman protester, Asem Nirmala, expressed dismay at the central government’s silence despite viral videos depicting the gruesome killing of two Meitei students.
She described the silence as regrettable and a reflection of the central government’s lack of seriousness towards the plight of the Meitei community.
“It is truly heart-wrenching to see the photos of the brutal murder of these two innocent youths. The photos clearly show that they were brutally murdered by armed Kuki miscreants.
Why is the central government silent till now, when our children have been killed in such cold blood?” she asked.
Nirmala pointed out that due to large-scale poppy cultivation by the Kuki community, many youths became addicted to drugs and lost their lives.
The current crisis is once again affecting many young people, and the central government’s failure to address the serious problem of illegal drug terrorism calls into question its intentions towards the Meiitei community.
Protests erupted after photos of the brutal murder of two missing students went viral.
The disturbing photos were taken while the students were in jail, allegedly by armed Kuki miscreants, and lying lifeless on the ground after being brutally beaten.
The shocking videos went viral, sending shockwaves through the general population.
Many women and shopkeepers also joined the protest in support and solidarity with the protesting students.
More than 40 students were injured during the protest.
It is to be mentioned that the photographs of two missing students Phijam Hemjit (20 years) and Hijam Linthoingambi (17 years) who went missing in July 2023 have surfaced on social media platforms.
