Imphal: Weaponized offenders allegedly opened fire at the house of a Congress leader in Manipur’s Imphal East district early on Sunday.
Suspected militant offenders opened fire at the residence of Manipur PCC Vice President Hareswore Goswami.
The incident took place around 12.40 am on Sunday morning at Wangkei Konsam Leikai under Porompat police station in Imphal East district.
The offenders fired ten rounds at the Congress leader’s residence and fled the scene in a vehicle.
Manipur Police said that a total of ten empty cartridges of 9 mm pistol were recovered from the gate of Hareswore Goswami’s residence.
CCTV footage installed at the gate of the Congress leader’s residence shows gunmen emerging from a car opening fire and driving the car away.
Police added that a case has been registered and efforts are on to nab those responsible for the attacks.
No militant group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident came a day after the Congress staged a sit-in against the police for lodging an FIR against the party’s youth leader N Popilal for criticizing the government on a local TV channel over its crackdown on drug traffickers.
The Congress also condemned the arson attempt at the party office between Friday and Saturday night.
After this incident, a team of Congress leaders led by former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh visited the accident site and condemned the incident.
