Imphal East: Fresh tension erupted in the Checkon area of Manipur’s eastern Imphal district, as unidentified miscreants set fire to two houses and a shop at different locations, one after the other, starting around 1:30 pm on Thursday. The incident resulted in a fierce encounter between the locals and the security forces in which three people, including an RAF jawan, were injured.
Around 1:30 pm, some unidentified miscreants set fire to an abandoned house in New Checkon of Imphal East district, which led to a mob gathering in the area. And the security forces reached the spot to control the crowd but the women residents of the neighborhood refused to give way, thus a heated argument ensued.
According to the crowd, the first house was allegedly set on fire by unknown miscreants to hatch a conspiracy in the ongoing unrest.
While talking to the media before the clash with the security forces, he said that ‘just as miscreants have set fire to the house to hatch a conspiracy, we are not allowing anyone to extinguish the fire’.
As the situation escalated, Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel resorted to tear gas shells, dummy bombs and rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the crowd coming from three different directions. In response, the angry mob retaliated by pelting stones and firing bullets at the security forces.
Unfortunately, during the commotion, a woman suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital for treatment.
And after a clash with RAF personnel, a male civilian and an RAF man were injured and rushed to hospital. The RAF man was given first aid on the spot by his fellow soldiers.
On receiving the information, the fire brigade team reached the spot and successfully doused the fire, preventing further damage. Meanwhile, a joint team of security forces succeeded in controlling the situation.
Later, a large crowd gathered from Porompat, Nongmeibung area and Andro parking and tried to move towards New Checkon. To control the crowd, the RAF men fired several rounds of tear gas, rubber bullets and mock bombs. The protesters also retaliated by firing bullets and stones at the security forces.
Clashes on both sides continued till late night and the number of casualties was not known till the filing of this report.
