In Hojai over merger with Nagaon

Nagaon: The All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) on Monday protested in Hojai against the state government’s decision to merge the district with Nagaon.

AAMSU supporters protested in nine areas across the district, raising slogans against the Himanta Biswa Sarma government.
He said that after years of struggle, Hojai was made a subdivision in 1983 and was made a district in 2016.

The protesters also tried to burn Sarma’s effigy. Police said the protesters dispersed and the situation was brought under control soon.
The Assam Cabinet on Saturday approved the proposal to merge four districts, including Hojai, from which these districts were formed. It was approved before the delimitation exercise notification came into effect on January 1.
