Guwahati: The Assam Police on Thursday arrested a 23-year-old man in Guwahati for allegedly eloping with and marrying a minor girl, officials said.
According to the police, the youth allegedly eloped with a minor girl and married her recently.
A police official said the girl’s family lodged a complaint after the incident, but the accused was absconding since then.
The police officer said, “We received a tip-off about the movement of the accused youth in Guwahati’s Gota Nagar area. Accordingly, an operation was launched as a result of which the accused youth was arrested from a house in this area.
According to the police, the accused told during investigation that he had married the girl and both were hiding to avoid arrest.
“We are investigating the matter to find out whether it was a case of early marriage. In any case, the POCSO Act will be applicable,” the official said.
