Guwahati: A 26-year-old woman constable of the Assam Police stationed at Paltan Bazar police station in Guwahati allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Brahmaputra river on Tuesday.
Police constable Gayatri Hazarika, a resident of Barhampur in central Assam’s Nagaon district, was missing since last night.
Reportedly, he was assigned duty at the eviction site of Silsako, a responsibility he strongly objected to. Despite her repeated appeals to senior police officers, her concerns were ignored, and she was posted to an eviction site against her will.
The discovery of her mobile phone, slippers, spectacles and a suicide note on the Saraighat bridge on Tuesday morning has led the police to suspect that she committed suicide by jumping into the Brahmaputra river.
“Gayatri Hazarika was apparently upset at being assigned duty at the Shilsanko eviction site. Though she was assigned four days of duty in the eviction drive, she did not report for duty on any day,” a police officer said. The official requested anonymity.
In an attempt to recover his body, the police have launched a search operation in the Brahmaputra river.
It is alleged that the police is trying to cover up the matter.
