In Guwahati amid heat transformer caught fire, locals rue APCL
GUWAHATI: As temperatures in Guwahati soared to 37 degrees Celsius, a transformer caught fire on the city’s Main B Barooah Road on Monday.
The location where the fire broke out around 4:30 am is one of the busiest commercial centers in the city. There are only two old and dilapidated transformers to supply electricity to several commercial complexes and residential buildings around B Barooah Road.
About 30 minutes after the fire broke out, two fire tenders reached the spot to douse the fire.
Although no one was injured or lost in the fire, the fire caused chaos among local residents and commuters, leading to traffic jams in parts of Alubari, B Barooh Road and Guwahati Club.
Highlighting the need for new transformers to replace the old transformers in the B Barooah area, several locals said that the electricity consumption in the area increases manifold in summer and the two old transformers can no longer handle the load due to the increase in the number of buildings.
Residents claim that they have lodged several complaints with APDCL regarding replacement of transformers but no action has been taken so far. He added that power outages have been frequent this summer.
Locals also said that alternative fire retardant materials should be used for cables due to the increase in PVC used in electricity cables during summer, adding that when they report short circuits. If there are, APDCL workers only carry out temporary repairs.
He said that the transformers have been bad for years.
Another local alleged that since the electricity board has ignored their complaints and power outages due to faulty transformers in the area are so troublesome that the local residents have to repair the transformers themselves from time to time.
