Imphal West: Sources said that at least five villagers were injured and one is in a critical condition after a gun battle in Faing and Koturk in Imphal West district when the villages were attacked by suspected Kuki militants.
According to the police, the firing reportedly started at around 11 am when some suspected Kuki militants opened fire almost simultaneously on villagers in Phayeng, Singda Dam and Kotruk areas.
The armed militants opened fire on the villagers with two-inch mortars and Lathode bombs, police said.
The villagers along with the state police force responded to the attack during which at least five villagers sustained bullet injuries, one critically, the police said.
The injured have been identified as 50-year-old Ann Tomba of Lamshang Bazar. N Tomba, 42, from Phayeng Sabal Leikai; Puyam Gilip, 28, from Lamshang; Thingujam Meiraba, 18, from Singada Part 1 and Laishram Romesh, 38, from Yumnam Khunou. They were taken to RIMS Hospital for treatment.
According to hospital officials, Tomba was shot in the left shoulder. N Tomba on his upper arms; Gulp under his chest; Meiraba’s upper arm while Romesh was shot on the right thumb.
Hospital officials said that except for Gulip, the injured are out of danger. Gulip is undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital as a bullet is lodged in his chest.
Meanwhile, all the personnel of Kongchep police station including the OC were camped at the camp of 22nd Assam Rifles at Singada in Kongpokpi district in an attempt to secure adequate defense from the intense gun battle in the Kangchup range.
