Agartala: While the Tripura police are facing the heat for protests following the rape of a college girl on the outskirts of Agartala, a gang of nine people along with two minor girls were arrested in Ompi area under Gomati district on Thursday night they allegedly committed gang rape.
“Preliminary investigation shows that both the girls knew the two men who were involved in the crime. They were Facebook friends,” said Bideshwar Singha, OC of Ompi police station.
He said, “The victims are residents of Natunbazar area of the same district and had come to Ompi for the Boishakhi fair held here. So far we have learned from the investigation that both the girls knew the two accused. On Wednesday night, “Both the girls reached Ompi to meet the boys at the fair. After spending some time there, the two boys told them that they knew a quiet place where they could sit for a while after passing through the fair,” said Sinha.
Later, they said, the two boys took them to an isolated spot inside rubber plantations spread over a vast area of land. “The other accused in the case were waiting for them at the spot. Once they reached there, the two girls were gang-raped by nine persons.
Meanwhile, after the inhuman violence, the two girls were chased to the fair grounds and threatened to keep quiet. However, both reported the incident to the police, and one of the accused was arrested shortly after.
Police sources said that out of the eight absconding accused, three have been found to be minors. The police have conducted raids to arrest the accused as soon as possible.
The incident came close to another rape case that was reported in Agartala. Women workers of opposition political parties came out on the streets calling this incident a clear sign of the destruction of law and order. The police had already arrested the main accused Gautam Sharma and after that he was remanded in police custody for five days.
Two more persons were detained, while one accused, identified as Prasenjit Paul, is absconding. In a new twist in the case, the police seized around Rs 90 lakh in cash from the house of Laxman Paul, the main accused in the rape case. “We have seized Rs 90 lakh from his residence. The vehicle involved in the incident has also been seized. Along with the cash, we have also seized some documents which show that the accused ran a cricket betting racket. “He gave loans to people at illegal high interest rates. We have decided to file a separate case against him under relevant provisions of the Gambling and Money Laundering Act,” said Kumar.
