In Goalpara on Garo youth’s killing AHAM seeks justice

Guwahati: Expressing concern over the death of a Garo wage laborer in a mob violence incident in Assam’s Goalpara district, A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) Assam State Zone on Thursday demanded the Assam government to compensate the victim’s family and Demanded to provide justice.
An unruly mob killed Sengseng Marak who belonged to Achik (Garo tribe) and was suspected of being a thief.
Sengseng Marak, son of Promison Sangma, a permanent resident of Bapupara, Balijana, lives with his wife Styapati Burman in Solmari, a retired policeman’s house.
On July 24, around 9 pm, the victim went outside the house to a local shopkeeper with the intention of buying a packet of tobacco.
But the victim did not return home and so the victim’s wife went in search of her husband around 7 am and to her surprise she found her husband tied to an electric pole on the roadside of Kalyanpur Bangali Basti under Agia’s Solmari. found police station.
The victim was beaten mercilessly with an iron repeatedly and injuries were inflicted on the victim’s neck and other vital parts of the body with sharp objects and a salt packet was rubbed on the wound to worsen his condition.
Seeing such situation, the victim’s wife pleaded with him to stop the unruly mob and the attack on the people in the concerned village, but no one paid any heed.

The angry crowd and bystanders beat up the victim and unfortunately the victim succumbed to his last breath.
“This is a highly sensitive matter and a matter of public persecution based on rumors and false allegations and unprecedented acts of human rights abuses and atrocities.
So those involved in the incident and those who orchestrated the mass killings or stood as ringmasters of mob justice should be booked,” AHAM Assam state zone president GM Sangma said. said in a statement here on Thursday.
“We also demand that such incidents should be proved and dealt with by an officer of ASP rank. Besides, we would also like to place on record that the victim was a daily wage labourer, as he belongs to the family. He was the sole breadwinner.
Therefore, the district administration should immediately compensate the next of kin of the victim considering the pitiable plight and financial difficulties,” said Sangma.
“In view of the above circumstances, we appeal to the concerned authority and the state government to take strict action against the person involved in mob violence and ensure justice to the family members of the victim and the next of kin of the victim. Provide such relief and compensation,” he added.
Golapara Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Ritutaj Doley said: “13 people have been arrested in connection with the murder.”

A Garo youth, Sengseng Marak (40), who had left his home to buy tobacco, was caught by a group of people and tied to an electric pole and tortured overnight, resulting in his death.
“Based on the video footage, we have identified all those involved in the incident. We are taking immediate action against him,” Dolly also said.

A case under section 120(B)/343/302 of the IPC was registered in Agia police station under No. 115/23.
