In Goalpara forest officer killed, 3 injured in attack by timber mafia

Goalpara: A forester was killed and three others injured in an attack allegedly by the timber mafia in Assam’s Goalpara district, police said on Tuesday.

The forest officials were attacked with sharp weapons at Krishnai Shalpara Darapara under Krishnai Range Forest Office of the district late on Monday night, the official said.
Forest officials rushed to the area after receiving information about felling of trees in the proposed reserve forest area and recovered a tractor full of sal trees.

The official said that when he tried to bring the tractor to the forest department office, he was attacked.
The injured were admitted to a hospital in Goalpara, while two of them have been referred to Guwahati.

Senior officials of the forest department and the police have reached the spot and a search has been started for the attackers.
