In Goalpara 68 prisoners transfered to newly built transit camp
Doomdooma: More than 60 prisoners have been shifted to the newly constructed transit camp in Goalpara, an official said.
The transit camp can accommodate 3,000 prisoners, including 400 women.
“The first batch of 68 prisoners was shifted from Goalpara District Jail to the transit camp. They include 45 men, 21 women, one girl and one boy,” said Superintendent Sashi Kumar Deka, in-charge of the transit camp.
“All 68 detainees were declared foreigners by the Foreigners’ Tribunal (FT),” Deka added.
After a long wait, the state government has started shifting the suspects and foreigners to the newly constructed detention centre, now named Transit Camp.
Assam has six transit camps, outside the existing jails at Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Jorhat, Silchar, Dibrugarh and Tezpur.
Sources said that in the new transit camp, about 220 suspects and foreigners, including 68 prisoners, have been kept in different centers.
Goalpara Transit Camp has been built at a cost of Rs 46 crore on 7 acres in West Matia. In August 2021, the Guwahati High Court had given 45 days to complete the construction work.
The transit camp has 15 buildings, including two for women. Each unit can accommodate 200 inmates. This facility is provided with hospitals, schools, recreational centers, food and other facilities.
