Imphal: Three protestors lost their lives and over 30 were injured during a demonstration in Churachandpur. The protest, which turned violent, began with the suspension of a police head constable who was allegedly involved in firing on innocent civilians in connivance with armed militants.
The unrest saw the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police set ablaze by unknown miscreants in Churachandpur.
The Indian national flag was also brought down from these government buildings.
According to Manipur police reports, a mob tried to storm the SP office of Churachandpur. in Manipur on Thursday night, hours after which a head constable of the district police was suspended after he was reportedly seen in a video with armed men, an official said.
Taking X, Manipur Police said, “A mob of about 300-400 tried to storm the SPCCP office today, pelting stones etc.
SF (Security Forces) including RAF are responding befittingly by firing tear gas shells to control the situation. Matters are under observation.”
Head constable Syamal Pal was placed under “immediate suspension till further orders” by Churachandpur SP Shivanand Surve after a video of him “sitting with armed men” and “village volunteers” went viral on social media.
Moreover, Siamlalpaul has been directed not to leave the station without prior permission, and his pay and allowances have been restricted to the subsistence allowance admissible under the rules.
