In financial hub Mumbai 6-storey building caught fire, Six died
New Delhi: A fire broke out in a six-storey residential building in India’s financial and entertainment capital Mumbai on Friday, killing at least six people and injuring 38 others.
Fire officer Ashok Tarapade said it took three hours for eight fire engines to put out the fire in Goregaon West district. He added that the rescue operation has been completed and the injured have been taken to two hospitals.
According to media reports, the fire broke out in some shops on the ground floor and smoke engulfed some floors. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
The Hindustan Times newspaper quoted Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar as saying that the building was built in 2006 to house people who had moved from a slum in Mumbai and did not have adequate fire-fighting equipment.
He said that the smoke spread in the building through the lift duct.
Fires are common in India, where building codes and safety norms are often violated by builders and residents.
In 2022, at least 27 people were killed when a massive fire broke out in a four-storey commercial building in New Delhi. In 2019, a fire caused by an electrical short circuit engulfed a building in New Delhi and killed 43 people.
