Dibrugarh: A woman linkman of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) was arrested by a joint team of Indian Army and Assam Police along with Rs 3 lakh in cash from near Dibrugarh University in eastern Assam on Saturday.
According to police, the woman, identified as Pushpanjali Gogoi, a resident of Dihing village in Laipuli area of Tin Sukiya district, was arrested around 3 pm. She was extorting money from local businessmen on behalf of ULFA (I).
A police official said that a mobile phone was also seized from her possession. This is the first time that a woman linkman of ULFA (I) has been caught with such a huge sum of money.
The arrest is a major setback for the organization, which has been using extortion for its activities.
Two weeks ago, ULFA (I) sent an extortion letter to a tea garden in Sonari area of Charaideo district demanding Rs 72 lakh to fund the banned outfit.
The extortion letter, signed by ULFA (I) leader Nayan Asom, was sent via WhatsApp to Manoj Gogoi, the manager of Timon Tea Estate in Charaideo. In the letter, an amount of Rs 72 lakh has been requested for the organizational fund.
The police have not yet arrested anyone in connection with the incident and further investigation is underway.
The arrest of Pushpanjali Gogoi and the extortion letter in the tea garden is a clear indication that ULFA (I) is still active in the region and continues to extort money from people.
