In Dibang rare surgery of 8 years old performed by cardiologists

Itanagar: In yet another major medical breakthrough for Arunachal Pradesh, doctors at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) successfully performed the first device closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) on an 8-year-old rowing boy, Lower Dibang Valley District.

The team consisted of Dr. Tony Ate, Dr. Rinchin Dorjee Megeji, Dr Taje Lucy and Dr. Doorick Ete.
A PDA is an abnormal communication between the aorta and pulmonary artery that allows oxygenated (red) blood to flow into the lungs.
The most common form of intervention for this problem is “device shutdown” in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. A catheter (a long thin tube) is inserted into the heart through a blood vessel in the leg. A device is then placed into the PDA, effectively locking it from the inside.
The team is extremely grateful for the unwavering support provided by the state government, which has been instrumental in making this clinical endeavor a reality.
The medical team appreciated Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Health Minister Alo Libang for their steadfast support during the journey.

Dr. Tony Ete gave special thanks to Dr. Moji Jini, Director of TRIHMS for his constant encouragement and motivation throughout the process.
The team acknowledged the trust and confidence placed in them by patients and their colleagues, emphasizing the deep responsibility that comes with such a clinical procedure.

This landmark achievement underscores TRIHMS’s commitment to advancing healthcare and serving the people of the state.
