Imphal: Two police commandos were injured today as security forces launched an operation to flush out militants allegedly behind attacks in valley-side villages in Manipur since violence erupted on May 3. They were injured in an operation at Tangjeng Khunjao in Kakching District bordering Chandel District.
Suspected militants armed with modern weapons have occupied Meitei village in the foothills after taking control of the village a few days ago after torching all the houses in the village, police said.
Police also said Meitei village is surrounded by Kuki village on three sides and suspected militants used to attack the village with guns since the violent conflict started. After capturing the village, the militants occupied the village by building temporary bunkers at the entrances of the village.
Police also said that by setting up camps in villages, suspected militants used to attack villages like Napat in Bishnupur district and Meitei villages in Sugnu areas with guns and bombs, killing and injuring dozens of villagers.
A joint team of state police commandos, Manipur Rifles, IRB and BSF launched an operation in the area from last night to flush out the militants and the exchange of fire continued till late evening today. Two police commando personnel were injured in the exchange of fire. Some militants are also believed to have been injured.
According to reports, two injured police commando personnel have been shifted to hospitals in Imphal. The reports further stated that as the militants started retreating from the area, the security forces destroyed several bunkers built by the militants. Security forces are likely to drive out the militants completely by tonight as they have advanced near Tangjeng Khunjao.
