
In Cachar from Dholai 9 exotic wildlife species recovered
Cachar: Cachar police on Sunday seized nine exotic species of wildlife from Dholai area of south Assam’s Cachar district, which were being smuggled from other countries.
According to the police, seven spider monkeys and two lemurs were found abandoned on the roadside in Dholai. The market value of the captured animals is around Rs 10 crore.
According to forest department officials, spider monkeys are found in the jungles of Madagascar and South America, where lemurs are found in Panama and Colombia.
The rescued wild animals are now being taken to the Guwahati zoo in a special ambulance after thorough examination.
Catcher SP Numal Mahatta said that they are probing the matter and will nab the smugglers very soon. “The Chief Minister has directed us to nab the criminals behind the racket and the police is on the job. We are questioning a few people in this connection,” said SP Numal Mahatta.
These exotic species are smuggled through Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar, and sold in various Indian markets where they fetch promising prices.
