Assam: The Barak Democratic Front (BDF) on June 25 called for a 12-hour bandh in three districts – Barak Valley, Cachar Karimganj and Hailakandi – to protest against the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) proposed delimitation drafts.
“In the larger interest of the people of this region, they have decided to call for a 12-hour bandh,” BDF Chief Convenor Pradip Dutta Roy said while briefing the media.
According to reports, it was earlier scheduled for June 30, but on June 25, they pushed it back to June 27.
Reports further claim that taking cognizance of this, the Hailakandi police issued a warning to Roy and asked him not to indulge in cognizable offences.
“We have received input that a bandh has been called against the order of delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies passed by the Hon’ble Election Commission of India. Therefore, you are informed through this notice US-149 CrPC “They should refrain from indulging in cognizable offences,” the police said.
“There are reasonable grounds that you will be involved in a law and order problem which may lead to the commission of a serious offence. In case of failure on your part, action will be initiated against you as per law, Police added.
It may be mentioned that the ECI had on June 20 released the proposed delimitation draft for Assam’s 126 Assembly seats and 14 Lok Sabha seats. As per the proposal, the assembly seats in Wadi Barak will be reduced to 13 from 15 till the 2021 elections.
