Guwahati: An assistant engineer of the irrigation department in Assam was caught red-handed while accepting bribe in Baksa district, police said.
He said that the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (V&AC) wing of the Assam Police on Wednesday arrested the assistant engineer in Suklai Serfang Goreswar Division (Irrigation) of Baksa.
He had demanded a bribe of Rs 30,000 from the complainant for issuing the work order after awarding the contract in the Irrigation Division. Later, the amount of bribe was reduced to 25 thousand rupees on behalf of the accused.
“Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached this directorate to take necessary legal action against the said government servant,” an official statement said.
Accordingly, a V&AC team laid a trap and the official was caught red-handed soon after accepting Rs 20,000 as part of the bribe demanded from the complainant’s friend.
“The tainted bribe money was recovered from the possession of the accused public servant and seized in the presence of independent witnesses,” the statement said.
He added that during the physical search of the official, an additional amount of Rs 10,000 was recovered from his possession.
“On finding sufficient evidence against the accused government servant, he has been arrested by the team of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam. Necessary legal follow-up is underway,” the statement said.
