In Ahmedabad for selling northeastern food two nagas assaulted

KOHIMA: Another incident of hate crimes against the people of Northeast has come to light in mainland India. Two people from Nagaland were attacked by a mob for “selling non-vegetarian and north-eastern food” in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The incident took place on Sunday night.

The two victims hailing from Nagaland have been identified as Rovimezo Kehie and Mapuyanger Jamir.

The victims work at a restaurant called One Stop Northeast.

The victims have also filed an FIR in connection with the incident at Sola Police Station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The assailants beat two people from Nagaland with baseball bats.

They also interrogated the two for “selling North Eastern food”.

When a customer tried to intervene, he too was attacked by the attackers.

In fact, the assailants threatened two men from Nagaland with dire consequences if they again sold North Eastern food in the city.
Both persons were injured in the incident and were undergoing treatment at Sola Civil Hospital.

Meanwhile, the hate crime incident has drawn strong reactions from many.

Nagaland BJP president and state minister Temjen Imna Along has condemned the incident.
“I am deeply saddened to hear about the recent hate crimes against two men from Nagaland who were attacked for selling non-vegetarian and north-eastern food,” Along said.

He added: “It is sad to see our brothers from the North East being targeted and discriminated against because of their cultural identity and food choices.”
