Implementation of Uniform Civil Code opposed by Konyak Union

KOHIMA: The Konyak Union (KU) has strongly opposed the proposed implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the Indian government, citing concerns about its potential negative impact on the existing peaceful society.
In a press statement, KU President Tingthok Konyak and General Secretary Manpang K Wangyen expressed strong opposition to efforts to impose UCC in any form.
The Konyak organization said their community was thriving and living harmoniously without the need for a uniform civil code.

According to the union, despite being mainly inhabited by Christians, the land of Cognac values inclusion and respects all faiths and communities.
KU underscored its strong belief in maintaining the principles of traditional practices and existing laws protected by Article 371 (A) of the Indian Constitution, which have served the Konyak community well for generations.

Consequently, the Union considered the Uniform Civil Code “unnecessary” for its land and community.
Recognizing the importance of unity among diverse communities, KU believes that the strength of their society lies in mutual respect and understanding developed over the years.
The Union stressed that their land has been a testament to peaceful coexistence, where people from different backgrounds have come together and shared their lives.

They warned that the implementation of a uniform civil code has the potential to disrupt the fragile fabric of their society, eradicating the unique cultural practices, customs and traditions that have shaped the Konyak community’s identity.
According to KU, the Uniform Civil Code, by attempting to standardize personal laws among different religious communities, risks undermining the diversity and richness of their land.
The Union reiterated its commitment to maintain peace and harmony in its jurisdiction, stressing that the existing legal framework, based on traditional practices and the law of the land, would ensure justice and fairness for all members of the Konyak community ensures justice.
Therefore, KU called upon the government and policy makers to respect the sovereignty and unique identity of the Konyak community at large and the Nagas.
They called for a thoughtful and inclusive approach to governance that takes into account the specific needs and aspirations of the Konyak community, enabling them to preserve their rich heritage and customs.
