Imphal: United Committee Manipur (UCM) president YK Dhiren has urged the Government of India to implement and update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) at the earliest possible.
He made the appeal during Langban Thagi Heitha Leithabagi Thouram (Meitei traditional practice of paying tribute to departed souls) held at Kekrupat today.
Notably, United Committee Manipur (UCM) has been observing the ritual every year to pay their obeisance to bravehearts who laid down their lives in different movements taken out throughout history to safeguard the unity and integrity of Manipur.
At the observance, Dhiren said that the Government should take up additional measures to deport illegal immigrants and check cross border movement as Home Minister Amit Shah had on multiple occasions cited drug issues and illegal immigrants as the factors behind the unrest in Manipur.
He urged the Government to stop the atrocities of illegal immigrants which is allegedly under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) pact immediately and deport them to wherever they came from.
Saying that lip service won’t resolve the crisis in Manipur, he urged the Central Government to understand the gravity of the issue and update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the context of Manipur at the earliest possible time.
He also urged the Government to fence the Indo-Myanmar border without compromising the territory of Manipur to prevent influx of illegal immigrants.
The lives of the indigenous people of Manipur will be severely affected if the threat being posed to the contemporary Manipur society is overlooked, the UCM leader added.
He continued that they will start holding a consultation programme with leaders of different communities from this month (September) onwards and discuss the possible ramifications which may unfold if the crisis persists.
Claiming that the Government of India has been only watching the violent aggression of Kuki narco terrorists who want to bifurcate the State instead of resolving the crisis, the UCM president added that the people of Manipur are displeased with how the Centre has been handling the crisis in Manipur all these months.
The movement being taken out by Meeteis in response to the aggression of Kuki narco-terrorists will determine the fate of Manipur, Dhiren said, appealing to the people to carry on the movement with a firm commitment to safeguard the State.
He also said that there should be a sense of unity among the indigenous people of Manipur to keep the State intact.
It is the Kuki narco-terrorists who have driven a wedge among the indigenous people to serve their interest and cause disintegration of the State, Dhiren maintained while cautioning that illegal immigrants will overwhelm the indigenous people if the sinister design of Kuki narco terrorists is not defeated.
