Imphal: Superintendent of Police, Imphal West District, Kush Shivkanta Singh, while wishing a safe and auspicious New Year, appealed to others not to worry and cause unnecessary trouble in the name of year-end and New Year celebrations in the district.
Singh spoke about the popularity of riverside picnic spots in Sekmai. The SP said that a public meeting between Sekmai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kh Sunil Kumar Singh and local leaders on Wednesday at Sekmai Police Station discussed ways to reduce untoward incidents at picnic spots during New Year celebrations.
The purpose of the meeting was to apprise the leaders of the problems encountered during the New Year celebrations and peaceful ways to overcome them.
The management expects heavy rush of picnickers on December 31 and January 1, 2023. The SP appealed to the pilgrims to maintain order and cleanliness and not to cause unnecessary trouble to others.
The SP strongly appealed against bringing licensed or otherwise firearms to picnic spots and said they would confiscate any firearms found during searches. He said that the licensed firearms would be returned to the original owners only after proper verification.
People should also be careful if they have children with them, the SP said, strongly appealing against anyone going into the river unnecessarily. We need to be vigilant, he said, stressing that there have been untoward incidents of drowning in the river during the festive season in the last few years.
He said that the police would also mark the restricted areas where the river is very deep and added that they should respect these signs.
The SP appealed to the picnickers to refrain from creating disturbances in the neighboring villages to avoid untoward incidents. Another thing we have to be mindful of is waste, he said, appealing to the picnickers to bring their own waste bags and dispose of the garbage at designated IMC waste collection centres.
He said that we have seen many accidents on the highway in the past years and appealed to everyone to follow the traffic rules. He also pointed to strict traffic checking.
The SP said that no one will be allowed to enter the picnic spots after 12 noon and the closing time will be 3 pm. He added that all picnic activities should end by 4 pm.
