Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court has ordered the Director General of Police (DGP) in Assam to take action against those involved in illegal coal mining and transportation in Meghalaya. The court emphasized the need to ensure the protection of the petitioners involved in the case.
The decision came in response to a show-cause notice issued to the Meghalaya government about the possibility of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into illegal coal mining activities, especially as it is in Assam. Appears to be organized by residents.
A full bench of the Meghalaya High Court headed by Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee directed the DGP of Assam on June 30, 2023 to conduct a thorough investigation into the complaint filed by the petitioner.
The court further directed the Assam Police to take appropriate legal action against those involved in the alleged illegal coal mining activities.
The purpose of this decision is to address the concerns raised by the petitioner regarding threats and intimidation received after filing a First Information Report (FIR) at Basitha Police Station.
Apart from taking action against the accused, the DGP of Assam is tasked with ensuring the safety and security of the petitioners, their families and the lawyers representing them.
The court’s directive emphasizes the importance of protecting the rights and welfare of those involved in legal proceedings related to illegal coal mining and transportation.
The Meghalaya High Court has scheduled another hearing on July 13 to dispose of various petitions related to illegal mining and transportation of coal.
