Hundreds of people protest in Namsai over the death of a laborer

Itanagar: Hundreds of people on Thursday blocked a road in Dirak Gate area of ​​Arunachal Pradesh’s Namsai district to protest the death of a laborer due to alleged severe beating, police said.
The laborer, identified as 60-year-old Sab Taye, was badly beaten by three other workers on Monday, Namsai Superintendent of Police Sange Thinley told the media.
They all worked together at a construction site.
Taye, a resident of New Silatoo village in the district, later succumbed to his injuries. The SP said that a case was registered and the three accused laborers were arrested.
Thinley said that during interrogation, the accused claimed that they had beaten Ty when he was caught stealing a drilling machine and some other equipment from the site.
On Thursday morning, hundreds of people from all walks of life staged a dharna and resorted to blocking the road in protest against the killing.
They demanded the arrest of a contractor who engaged the laborers in the construction work.

Later in the day, the road blockade was lifted, Thingley said, adding that the situation was tense but under control.
