House engulfs in flames as fresh tension erupted in Manipur capital

Imphal: In Manipur, fresh tension erupted in the capital Imphal, as a house in the Chasad Avenue area caught fire in broad daylight. The incident has exacerbated already existing communal tensions in the state, raising concerns about security and intelligence measures.
The armed men are forced to close the shops while checking the area. Security forces rushed to the spot to control the situation. Meanwhile, two persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Earlier on May 21, Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed deep regret over the recent outbreak of communal tension during the 31st Anti-Terrorism Day celebrations organized by the government. Singh acknowledged lapses in security and intelligence and appealed to the public not to indulge in blame-shifting or infighting but to hold the government accountable.
Addressing a gathering at the Old Manipur Secretariat, Singh highlighted the government’s responsibility to protect society from illegal activities. Measures were already in place to tackle issues like illegal immigration and illegal drug trade to ensure Manipur’s future security.
The Chief Minister assured the public that the state government had no intention of hurting the sentiments of any community.
Adding to the dire situation, the death toll in Manipur due to recent clashes stood at 71, according to Security Advisor Kuldeep Singh. As a result of exchange of fire between Manipur commandos and militants, six commandos were injured and one lost his life.
