Tripura’s first Padma Shri awardee Himangshu Mohan Chowdhary passed away on Tuesday.
Chowdhary was a civil service officer and philanthropist. He was 84 years old.
When he was posted as Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) in Sonamura during the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence, Chowdhary extended a helping hand to more than 2.5 lakh Bangladeshis, who were suffering from conflict and persecution. They ran away and came to Tripura.
It built tents and makeshift kitchens for the refugees, ensuring food and shelter.
Chowdhary was awarded the country’s third highest civilian honor by the central government in 1972. The then Bangladesh government also honored him for his “dedication and spontaneity”.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha tweeted his condolence over his demise, “Deeply saddened to learn of the demise of Tripura’s first Padma Shri awardee Himangshu Mohan Chowdharyji.”
“May his soul rest in eternal peace. Om Shanti!” he added.
