Heavy rains likely to be in northeast India, amid heatwave session

GUWAHATI: In some good news for northeast India, currently baking in scorching heat, heavy rain over the weekend could help cool things down.

The meteorologist has predicted fairly widespread rains of light to moderate intensity with thundershowers and gusty winds over Northeast India during the next five days (April 20-24).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that atmospheric instability has made itself comfortable over Northeast India. And this system is expected to bring localized thunderstorms (and snow at higher elevations) in the coming days.

While the rainfall activity may reduce the impact of the current heatwave conditions in all the states, the Meteorological Department does not expect any significant drop in mercury in the next five days.
Meanwhile, heavy rain is forecast in Arunachal Pradesh between Thursday and Saturday (April 20-22) and Assam and Meghalaya between Friday and Saturday (April 21-22).

The weather channel has predicted isolated rain on Thursday and widespread rain and thundershowers on Friday in other northeastern states including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura (NMMT). .
Between April 1 and 19, Arunachal Pradesh recorded just 57.8 mm of rainfall – a ‘major deficit’ of 69 per cent compared to the long-term average for the time frame. During the same period, Assam and Meghalaya recorded 51.4 mm and NMMT recorded 42.4 mm, recording a deficit of 51% and 47% respectively.
