Heavy rains flood Barak Valley, affecting hundreds

Silchar: For the past few days, continuous rains and subsequent floods have badly affected the residents of Barak Valley in Assam, damaged many houses and uprooted many trees.
Katigorah in Cachar district was the hardest hit, with reports of massive damage in the last 48 hours. A BSF camp in Balichara, near the Indo-Bangladesh international border in Katigura, was damaged by strong winds and rainstorms on Friday evening.
The flood-hit villages of Katigorah include Klein, Dhumkar, Saligram and Maugram. A 150-year-old bridge over a river in the Kalaincherra area has also collapsed. Kati Gowda Congress MLA Khaliluddin Mazumdar and Kati Gowda Circle Officer A Minarva Devi inspected the constituency on Friday and took stock of the situation in view of the artificial flood.
Traffic on National Highway-6 (Assam-Meghalaya Road), which is considered the lifeline of the Barak Valley, has been affected by landslides in many areas. Water from the hills is flooding the roads, making it difficult and dangerous for vehicles to pass. Excavators and other machines have been put to work.
