Heavy gunfire exchange of Police commando, 7 MR with militants

Imphal: Manipur Police Commando personnel and 7 MR exchanged heavy fire with Kuki militants in Kadangband Part-1, Kangchup Chingkhong and Thongkhong under Kangchup Police Station in Imphal West on Sunday morning.
According to sources, at around 12.23 pm, Kuki militants opened fire and attacked Kadangband Part-1 from Geljang village. It said the 7th MR personnel, who were posted at a community hall, retaliated by firing at the militants.
Sources said that SP Imphal West S Ibomcha, who was on his way to conduct a spot inquiry in Phayeng about the killing of a youth by Kuki militants on the Freedom Hills, heard about the attack and headed towards the battlefield.
His team moved towards the Singda water supply and started firing at the militants. When they realized that the police commandos were firing at them, the militants started running around their bunker in Geljang village.
According to sources, when the CDO personnel continued to fire in the direction of the militants, they left their bunker and fled.

He said that the police commando came down the hill around 8 am.
Later, there was reportedly shooting and burning of houses in Kangchup Chingkhong and Thongkhong around 10 am.
Angry villagers in Phayeng set fire to a house in Kangchup Chingkhong and a school near Thongkhong. In response, the Kuki militants opened fire on the village with automatic guns.
Meanwhile, the women came out and blocked the roads at various points along the Uripok Kangchup Road to prevent central forces from entering the area.
