Ukhrul: The search for the bodies of two women who were allegedly swept away while crossing a river during heavy rain in Ukhrul district continued for the third day on Wednesday.
According to locals, around 200 people, including 14 officers of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) led by AK Jutan Singh, 20 personnel of the NDRF and Assam Rifles have been involved in search and rescue operations since Monday evening. busy. The incident took place around 4:30 pm on Monday when two women of Poi village under Chingai block were returning home after work in the paddy field. Two women, identified as RK Ramrela (35) and RS Ngamreila (30), were reportedly swept away by the flowing waters of the Tholiru river near Chalo river.
A villager said that there is not a single swing bridge to cross the river.
After the incident, a team of Chingai Block police officials, families and villagers arrived to locate the bodies. However, the rising volume of river water made search operations difficult even on the third day of the operation, the NDRF said.
“Today the water level has dropped to 4 feet but the current is still strong. Despite these challenges, we are trying our best to trace the bodies. The search will continue till we find the bodies,” Titus Sekho of NDRF said.
Ramreila is survived by her husband and five children while Ngamreila is survived by her husband and six children.
