Cachar: The situation in Assam’s Cachar district turned volatile after mass protests broke out on July 18 following the recovery of the half-burnt body of an 18-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped and murdered.
According to sources, the body of the girl was recovered from an under-construction building in the Dwarbond area of Dholsi in Cachar,, creating excitement and tension in Silchar.
Suddenly, a group of people gathered with the dead body of the girl in Rangirkhari area in the middle of Silchar town and started a protest demanding immediate action against those involved in this heinous crime.
The situation worsened when a few people started shouting slogans against the police and started pelting stones in which a CRPF jawan was seriously injured and a few other policemen were injured.
A heavy security force was deployed with a few baton charges and two rounds of blank firing to disperse the angry crowd. The struggle to disperse the crowd and vacate the area continued from 11:30 pm to 12:00 pm.
The police officials say that the parents of the deceased girl were cooperative, but a few people have been arrested for rioting.
